My Story
Why I’m Riding…
Back in 2013, I ran the Sydney Marathon to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Institute after my Dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. We thought he’d beaten it, but unfortunately, the cancer has come back a few times since.
Dad is now 70, and while he continues to fight, I’m grateful to have had all these extra years with him.
A lot has changed since 2013. I’ve since had a hip replacement, which means long-distance running is no longer really an option, so this time I’m getting on a bike instead.
I’ve also become a dad myself to an 11-month-old little girl, Alena. Having a daughter of my own has made me appreciate even more how precious time with the people you love really is.
Having watched Dad battle cancer over the years, this cause remains very close to home. As hard as his journey has been, he’s had 70 years of life, experiences and memories. The thought of a child losing their life to cancer before they’ve had the chance to experience any of that is heartbreaking.
That’s why I’m taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge: to raise money for childhood cancer research and help give more kids the chance to grow up, experience life and make memories of their own.
I can’t change what my Dad has been through, but I can hopefully do something small help other families facing the same battle.
