I'm Riding For
Katelyn Mole
Our beautiful girl was taken from us much earlier than we liked. Even during her illness she put others first and did all she could to encourage others who were struggling. We know that she trusted God and is in a better place but also miss her dearly.
My Story
Just over six and a half years ago my daughter, Katelyn, was diagnosed with cancer (Acute Myeloid Leukaemia). After numerous rounds of chemo she had a stem cell transplant in July 2018. While she was being treated at Westmead I got involved in the Great Cycle Challenge to help raise awareness and funds for fighting kids' cancer. Even though Katie wasn't a "kid" when she was diagnosed finding a cure for childhood cancer will benefit all cancer sufferers.
Katie passed away in March 2020 due to complications following her stem cell transplant, so I'll be riding in memory of her and in the hope of finding a cure for others.
Throughout October I'll be aiming to ride 200 km. I know a lot of you support other causes but if you can spare a little please consider supporting my challenge by making a donation.
All funds raised will support the Children's Medical Research Institute to develop treatments and find cures for childhood cancers.
Thank you.
Darrel

Ride 7
7 Oct 2024Another sunset ride with Linda this evening.
7.1 KMs which ups today's total to 22.7.
Amazing the difference a day makes on a long weekend. Yesterday we were constantly ringing bells because the shared path was crowded, tonight there were very few people out.

Ride 6
6 Oct 2024Got up early and went for a ride on my own.
Nice cool start to the day.
Went out to Dunbogan and the back past the markets to North Haven heads.
About 8 KMs in I decided to put the odometer onto time so I wasn't concentrating on the KMs. The clock hadn't been adjusted for daylight savings so I attempted to do that as I was riding along and managed to clear my odometer (Doofus).
Ended up with another 7.6km so am calling it 15.6km (might have been a tad more).

Ride 5
6 Oct 2024Later ride today as it was 30 degrees earlier in the day.
Headed off from West Haven on my own and met Linda at the boat ramp (3.5 km). Then we headed up along the bike track to the heads.
Lots of dolphins were active at the heads so we stopped to watch for a while and Linda took some photos.
After that we went up to beach and rode down to the bowling club before coming back to the beach and along the path back to the car. More dolphins along the way.
11 km in all (I don't like finishing on an odd number).
A nice ride at sunset and the cool evening air.

Ride 4 - 5th October.
5 Oct 2024Another 10 KMs today at Port Macquarie.
Parked in town and the first leg was out to Settlement Point and back. Had a flat tyre about 200m from the car. Turned out to be a weird hole in my rear tube right near the valve stem. The slime didn't stop it going flat and it didn't want to reinflate so had to change the tube. Quick job and back on the bike out to the path above Flynn's Beach and back to maintain a 10 km daily average.

Ride 3 - 4th October
5 Oct 2024A little longer today 16.7 kms, bringing the total up to 40.2 KMs and restoring a 10 km daily average.
Parked the car at North Haven and rode out to the beach and back. Then we headed back over the bridge and out to Dunbogan again but this time pushed on to Camden head before returning.
Mostly along the river so a very pleasant ride. A couple of hills out near Camden Head but not that hard.
The legs are feeling it a bit and the butt is a bit sore. Out of practice.

Ride 2 - October 3
5 Oct 2024Along the river at West Haven and then out to Dunbogan. The ride was comfortable and the scenery was good.
The last hill coming back to the house was a bit hard.
Knocked over another 13.3 KMs but it seemed longer than it was. I hope I adjusted the odometer correctly. It might be because I haven't ridden for a few weeks or maybe I'm just getting old.

Bike repair
5 Oct 2024Missed a day of riding today due to travel but picked up a wheel for $30 on the way and replaced the buckled one on the bike. Realised while doing so that the odometer on the bike was reading incorrectly, so amended that whole I was at it.

Ride 1 - 1st October.
5 Oct 2024First ride in Collingwood Park.
Discovered that the front wheel must have hit the ground at some point while the bike was on the car rack, on the trip up.
Wheel has a buckle and will need to be replaced.
Still got 10.2 KMs done.
